Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious should absolutely be in the dictionary. If ‘WTF’, ‘LOL’ and ‘FYI’ get a place in dictionaries, then I do not see why this fantastic word which the majority of the world knows does not likewise receive a promotion.
Probably because there really isn’t a concrete, solitary definition for the word which is what dictionaries are there for I suppose.
Yesterday I was treated to the stage production of “Mary Poppins” here in Australia. You may notice my details have a reference here and there because I’m terribly fond of it. I always liked Bert best, really, that laid back and charming kind of personality has always appealed to me but alas I can never manage to pull it off in my own characters. Somehow cynicism and sarcasm creep in even though the women are doing enough of that for two.
For example, my current work is a story about a witch because I have never actually attempted such a thing and really, why not? Witchy-poo is being very lovely and cool and falsely pleasant to people, or in the words of a friend of mine ‘she seems like a real hard ass!’ whilst her companion began as a boyish and clumsy fellow down on his luck, then became a thief and a con man and is now becoming a pain in the behind. It never ceases to amaze me how my own characters run away from me and become all together uninteresting and unlikable to me. It is a form of masochism, I’m certain of it.
Wouldn’t it be nice (if we were older…) if I could write a story that wasn’t a fantasy or science-fiction? Those are my favourite genres but plots become so complicated. Regardless any attempt to write in the ‘real world’ results in sickeningly simplistic plots and plain work-a-holic-at-first-then-completely-lazy characters. I tried basing characters on people I know – word of advice, never ever do this; you will either offend someone or boost someone’s ego, or you will creep someone out or your characters will just end up so different they are unrecognisable. This is what happened to me and so I set that aside. I highly recommend you do likewise.
So today I have been bursting out with ‘chim-chimminy-chim-chimminy-chim-chim-cheroo’, ‘just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down, the medicine go down, medicine go down’ and ‘supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, even though the sound of it is really quite atrocious, if you say it loud enough you’ll always sound precocious, supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!’ and it was an interesting experience for all around me, but it was perhaps a welcome relief from ‘weren’t you the one who tried to hurt me with goodbye, did you think I’d crumble, did you think I’d lay down and die, oh no not I, I will survive!’ yesterday. It’s also a step up from my elder sister’s ‘we want your leather pants’ that she’s been singing all day.
I think I’m getting off topic, if I ever had a topic to begin with. I don’t know. With a flourish of my hat and a twirl of my moustache (if I were in possession of one) I bid you adieu and au revoir.
